ABOUT

In 2012, State Senator Vincent Hughes created the Read to Succeed Program to engage students in literacy over the Summer months. The goal of the program is to promote literacy and prevent the phenomenon known as “Summer Slide.”

Studies prove children who do not read during the Summer can lose up to three months of reading progress and that has a cumulative, long-term effect. Summer reading loss during the elementary grades accumulates to an achievement gap of 18 months by the end of sixth grade, and accumulating to two or more years in reading achievement by the end of middle school.

Providing a solution, the Read to Succeed program has created a comprehensive, and intentional, Summer reading program that provides students with opportunities to engage in reading and have access to reading materials and instruction during the Summer months. The program targets low-achieving students in an effort to mitigate summer learning loss. The goal is to mitigate “summer slide” and promote literacy for students entering grades 1-3.
